Interesting story behind my top song of the week, Anika Norlin is a Swedish artist who sings under the band name Säkert! when she sings in Swedish and Hello Saferide when she sings in English. In a strange but cool twist she decided to translate the Swedish songs almost word for word into English and record the songs again. The result is an album called "på engelska" which translates to "in English" and although the songs were written in a different language they really work well (of course it doesn't hurt that I have a crush on Norlin as well). The rest of the show was a selection of my recent indie pop acquisitions ending with a softer low-key set. And I know it really looks like a set up, but my random ending song was by Prince who I happen to be seeing perform live in a few weeks for the first time, I swear it just worked out that way.

My top song this week came from a mix that was made for the New York City Popfest way back in May (yes I finally got to it) by the website Brooklyn Vegan. I missed the popfest this year partly because I didn't recognize any of the bands, but listening to this collection of songs makes me think it still would have been a great time. The second set featured someone that I had not heard from in too long of a time, the old timers out there will remember a band from KW called War Wagon which eventually evolved into Finnegan's Tongue. After releasing an album of songs that were all based on historical events or people from the Waterloo Region the band went their separate ways. Well Mike Wert from that band is finally writing some new material and with help from his former FT bandmates he sent me the song "Tom Longboat". Hopefully the is just the first of much new material coming from him.

I had a hard time picking my top song this week and either of the first two songs could have made the cut, but in the end I went Cold Mailman, one of the bands that I saw at the Oya festival in Norway this summer. However, the other song by Craft Spells is also awesome and that album has a good chance of being one of my favourite albums of the year. I also really liked the rest of the first set making it one of the best ones I've played in a while.

I planed the second set to be more on the rocking side of indie pop, but I'm never sure if it ever works out, and I ended with a funky set, that I'm pretty sure that worked.

It was a funky start to this show all stemming from the top song, Erik Hassle's Hurtful, which turns out to be a song from a few years ago that was recently made a free download on Amazon that caused its resurgence. I found out about it from the great popcasting podcast ( http://popcastingpop.com/ ).

The next set consitsted of recent indie-popular songs that I discovered through satellite radio when my rental car was upgraded. There are a couple of great satellite radio stations that play indie pop and at one point they were both playing The Cults, that was a sign that I had to play them at my DJ night at the Jane Bond (details here: http://thecoolestthingaboutlove.blogspot.com/ ) as well as on the podcast.

The last set were a bunch of songs that I have been listening to forever on my MP3 player and finally had a chance to get them out. The Random Ending song, randomly chosen from my music collection, was Sloan's Everything You've Done Wrong, still my favourite Sloan song.

This show was a special one as it highlighted bands that I saw last week at the Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway: http://www.oyafestivalen.com/pages/eng/1-news

I didn't get to play all of the bands that I saw but I think that this show gives a good flavour of the festival. I also tried to give you a feeling of what it was like to be there and point out some of the things they did well such as their environmental efforts.

I split the sets up into indie pop, Scandinavian bands, funky bands, and electro pop. There were some heavy metal and other harder bands but I didn't really actively watch any of those so they didn't make the show.

This was a special all-internet version of the podcast as all the songs came from streaming sites all over the web. As a result you can see that after each song on the setlist is the location where you can listen to the song yourself, maybe listen to other songs by that artist, and hey if you like them you might even want to purchase a song or two.

My top song of the week was by British band Allo Darling who I had the pleasure of seeing a few weeks ago in Toronto and there I picked up their 2010 self-titled debut album. They have a great indie-pop sound that even impressed some of the really drunk guys who randomly walked into the El Macombo during the show. Another bonus of seeing them live was that I recognized the bass player as a member of Moustache of Insanity whom I saw at last year's NYC popfest, this made me feel cool in my own mind and made me realize my twee pop obsession has really gotten out of hand.

All of the second set was from the blog Beat the Indie Drum where they put out a list of 32 albums that were the best of the year so far. Along with the more famous bands like Lykke Li, The Acid House Kings, and Peter, Bjorn, and John there were also a lot of lesser known artists. I'm sure that if you listen to all the songs you will find a few that you really enjoy, I know that I did.

Sorry, it has been a while since the last podcast, I've been relocating and finally have all of the necessary equipment in one place to do a recording. But the result is that this is an indie poptastic show with lots of the great music that I've been collecting over the last many weeks.

I'll say right now that I expect two of the songs in the first set to end up being on my top 10 singles of this year. The second set all came from a sampler from Brassland Records of New York that you can download for free here: http://brassland.bandcamp.com/album/brassland-sampler-for-2011-free , it features such artists as The National and Baby Dayliner.

I never know what to play for the last song of the show as it is usually orphaned away from the other sets, so I'm going to try something new and take a random song from my digital music collection and use that as my last song. We'll see how it goes, but I really liked and forgotten about this week's random ending.

A lot of new material this show with the first set consisting entirely of albums released in 2011, many of which will probably end up in my top 10 for the year. These included songs by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Go! Team, Acid House Kings, Those Dancing Days, and Lykke Li. And I now know that I mis-interpreted the lyric in The Pains song, instead of "you look so hard in fishnets and leather" I thought it was "you look so hot ...", I like my version better.

After a set of some more rocking indie music I ended with a funky set, something I haven't done in a while. Sorry about the sound quality on the Archie Bell and the Drells song, but the I just loved the song too much not to play it.

The show started with an album that has been a long time coming, the last Acid House Kings album was way back in 2006 and although the band members have done various other projects, this was the first proper Acid House Kings release since then. The album is called Music Sounds Better With You and is filled with all the happy feel good indie pop that you would expect from them.

The rest of the show was a random selection of great music that I've come across in the last little while as well as an indie pop classic from Guided By Voices.

The entire first set came from a sampler that was put out before the New England Popfest last November, I finally got around to playing some of the great songs that were on it. In particular my top song was done by the Smittens (who of course do the theme to my DJ night at the Jane Bond) and is one of those songs that I had to listen to everyday for about 2 weeks.

And a note about the last song I played, the song "Love Bath" by Smokey Robinson is just as good as you might image a song like this might be. I was quite surprised to learn that the song comes from a release from last year.

Some great new indie pop, some free downloads, and a link to porn, all in a day's work at the Fireball XL5 podcast.

My top song of the week was a bonus song on a 7 inch single that came with the most recent Belle and Sebastian album when you bought it directly from Matodor Records (which I did not do). So I was surprised when I heard it and realized that it is as good or better then any song on the proper album. The name of the song is "Suicide Girl" and if you don't know what that refers to then I'll leave it to you to do an internet search or if you are not at work you can click on the second video for the song below and find out.

For the rest of the show I tried to get to the large amount of new music that I've accumulated since my last new show back in December. My highlight was the new song by Those Dancing Days who just seem to be getting better and better with each single, the real test will be their first album which comes out in March.

I wanted to do one more show before my Christmas and Best Of podcasts, so I snuck this one in. Mostly a lot of leftovers that I wanted to get out of way before 2011. However the second set featured artists that played the Bowlie 2 festival in England, although it was far away and would have been expensive, it also would have been great. There is a link below that lists the bands that played, but the most important thing to know about the festival was that it was curated and starred Belle and Sebastian.

I never really know when to consider that an album has actually been released? Maybe I'm old school but I like to see the physical copies before I think of an album as being released. So although the new Knock, Knock, Ginger album "We're headed for a fall" is available from the
Dadmobile website: http://www.dadmobile.com/kkg/fall/ the physical CDs won't be available until sometime next year, thus in my mind it is a 2011 release.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that everybody should go to the site and download the
album for free and of course a little bit of monetary support to the band would also be cool (which can be done right on the website above).

I had my favourite song from the album narrowed down to two songs, in the end I picked "Safety in Letters", I'll leave the other one for another show. The rest of the first set was some newer indie pop followed by the second set where I went a bit retro with songs from The Magic Numbers, Sloan, and the Go-Betweens. The next two sets went from electo-pop to some funky old soul.

It would be strange for a Belle and Sebastian album to come out and it not be my top song of the week. Although after the first few listens, I do have to admit, I just wasn't getting into "Write About Love", but since then it has grown on me and I had a hard decision to pick which track to play on the show. Then there was the added bonus of seeing them at Massey Hall last month, a perfect place to see one of my all time favourite bands.

In fact all the songs first set were from albums that I had recently bought (B&S, Antarctica Takes It! and The Drums) while the other two were songs from albums that haven't even been released yet (Acid House Kings, and Lykke Li). The Acid House Kings album should be out early next year while there is no time line that I have seen for Lykke Li. I love that the Acid House Kings have shared a spreadsheet on Google Docs where you can follow the progress of the album all the way from writing the melody and chorus, to recording the vocals, to final mastering. See the link below to follow along yourself.

The rest of sets went from female pop, to indie rock, ending with a slower set to take us out. I ended with a song by the late great Solomon Burke. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing him perform while attending a conference in Italy, he was a true showman who obviously greatly enjoyed what he was doing. Thus it is not surprising that he died while travelling to do a concert.

The show started out with yet another song that I got from the show Central Services on CFRU, it is a song by the Divine Comedy which might just be dismissed as a novelty song that is an excuse to mention a bunch of indie pop bands. But Neil Hannon just captures the spirit of going to the same place every week with the same bunch of friends listening to the same songs so well that it works. Although it wasn't a Thursday night and we didn't call it the "indie disco", with all the years that my friends and I used to go to a little place called "Phil's Grandson's Place" in Waterloo every weekend back in the day, this song could have been about us.

Also in that set I played the Library Voices, I know that I talked about them when they were my top song a few shows ago, but having seen them live again a few weeks ago I have to again recommend doing what you can to see them live, they put on such a great, fun, high energy show.

The rest of the show consisted of great indie pop from the various podcasts and blogs that I frequent and as I had a backlog of electropop, I played a set of it at the end. And do yourself a favour and listen to the last song of the show "Roving Woman" by Connie Converse as it gives some good advice to the ladies out there.

I urge you to listen to the link below of my top song of the week, it is one of those top songs that I just have to listen to at least once a day. Unfortunately I fell in love with this acoustic version of the song that of course is different than the one on the album, has that ever happened to you? I guess I will have to learn to love them both.

As it turns out, although it wasn't my original intent, the first set worked out as all female singers while the second set was all male.

The soul set I mostly stole from the former CKMS and now CFRU show Central Services where Cory and Trevor did a special feature a few months back called "Spring into soul". Although it seems like so long ago, this was the show where I played songs by bands that I saw at this year's Hillside Festival. Although there wasn't a big name band there that I had not seen before, there were still enough smaller surprises that it was good time.

Then came a set of cool new indie pop from the likes of Juni Jarvi, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, and the Salteens. I also noticed that the Salteens were playing some shows around Canada, but I was surprised that they were doing 2 shows a day during the afternoon in really big arenas. So it turns out they are playing as part of the traveling Yo Gabba Gabba show. This is a kids program that for some reason has had a crazy list of indie pop bands who have appeared on the show including the Salteens.

It was also far too long since I managed to squeeze in an electro-pop set so I did. And I even managed to find a song with sound bytes from Stephen Hawking who spent the summer working at a physics institute in Waterloo. However, I was disappointed that I didn't see him around town, I thought that he might be hanging out at the Jane Bond or at the Princess.

For this show I did a spotlight on the 'net-label' eardrumspop ( www.eardrumspop.com ) which appears to be a 'label' in the sense that they release compilations for free (with permission of the bands) on the hope that people will fall in love with the bands and buy their stuff. Although they suggest making a donation to a charity when you download an album.

With 2 sets from eardrumpop it meant that over half of the songs on the podcast can be freely downloaded, that's kind of cool.

Now, if they put out hard core metal I wouldn't be that interested, but of course with the sweet indie pop that comes from their factory I'm hooked. At the beginning of the summer they put out 3 separate compilations, each with a slightly different sound, Volume 3 is my favourite.

In the last set I finally broke out of the indie-pop straightjacket and brought the funk back to Fireball XL5.

This show was all about the NYC Popfest that I went to a few weeks back. Although they didn't have the big names like last year and the fact that I missed some bands I really wanted to see because of transportation problems, it was still a good time.

The band I enjoyed the most was a band from way back called The Wake who were on Factory Records with New Order and then went on to have some releases on Sarah Records. I really enjoyed their show and I feel embarrassed that I didn't know anything about them beforehand. They broke up in the mid-90s but have reformed in the last 6 months and have played a handful of shows including the NYC Popfest, they are also planning on releasing a new album this year.

As a started the show with 2 sets from bands that played the Popfest, I stuck to indie pop for the rest of the show.

Lots of pop, some rock, and some funky stuff this show. As well I played some older material from my CD collection that I'm trying to archive to save shelf space.

The second set started with a disappointment from the past week when my chance to see The Mary Onettes in Chicago was canceled because of the Icelandic volcano. And the odds of my being back in Chicago when they (hopefully) reschedule their tour are pretty bad. Needless to say Chicago was still pretty cool.

I'm also getting better at finding out where I first heard songs so I can give credit to the great music I find out about from other people's podcasts and blogs.

I started the show with a song from the most recent release of the Waterloo band Bocce, their sound has really matured since their last release and I encourage everyone to go to their website (listed below), download their album, and if you like it support the boys with a donation.

This past week I was looking at clearing some space from a computer and found a directory where I once downloaded the entire content of the famous C86 cassette compilation from the New Music Express (NME). It came out in 1986 and featured some of the best indie-pop bands of the time. I sprinkled the show with songs from the compilation and I was amazed at how well the songs stand the test time after almost 25 years. I got into a dancey/electropoppy mood with my top song of the week and it just continued from there for most of the show.

The second set started with Ted Leo and the Phamacists covering "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" originally by Tears For Fears. This was the first song from The Onion's musical arm: the AV club and their project called Undercover. As they describe it: 25 bands, 25 cover sosngs, 1 small round room. It looks like some interesting covers are coming up, everything from Hall and Oats, to M.I.A. to Neutral Milk Hotel to The Replacements. I also stole a set idea from the podcast of Paul the Advanced Warning Guy ( http://www.advancedwarning.cjb.net ) who played the Pipettes and some other bands with the same kind of style, so I went with it and played a single from the upcoming CD from the Pipettes. Now I would be very excited by this if these were the same Pipettes as before, but unfortunately 2 of the members have left the band and it is now down to Gwenno and her sister. I unfortunately don't hold out much hope, however in the set I also played something from Electric Blue a band led by Rebecca Stephens who was one of the woman that left the Pipettes. Finally a chance to play some new music after many themed shows, this of course created a log jam for my top song of the week as I had lots to choose from. So any of the first three songs could have been the one, but I went with the one I listened to the most over the last few weeks. Wow, has it been 10 years already, yes I remember doing my best of the 1990s radio show way back when. Who would have thought then that my next best of the decade recap would be on an internet only podcast distributed on something called the internet created on a magical box called a laptop.

My annual best of show highlighting my picks for 2009. I started off with the singles and worked up to the albums ending with double shots of the top 4.

You can listen to the comments about the songs on the podcast, but I just want to say that I might be crazy by putting a CD I just got in the beginning of December as my top pick however I'm just loving it that much.

It is the best pure twee pop songs together in one place for many years. Catchy songs, references to public transit, waiting in line for concert tickets, and the boy/girl vocals just hits all my buttons.

As this was my last new music show for a while (Christmas show next, then best of shows) I tried to get rid of a lot of leftover songs that I have collected over the last year. Some of them seem very old to me as I have been listening to them for a while on my MP3 player, but I was surprised when I checked my archive and had never played them on the show. Nobody should be shocked that most of the show was in the indie pop/twee side of the musical spectrum.

The third set was loosly related to the Jens Lekman song "Maple Leaves" which came up during a shuffle play while a bunch of us were at Erik's place. The song is a story about a guy who misinterprets his girlfriend saying that thier love was "make believe" but he thinks they she said "Maple leaves". Similarly there is confusion between the fall of their relationship and the band with Mark E. Smith, so that's why I played the Fall and the other two songs are just related to people where were also there.

A lot of this show, especially the first set was stolen from the show Central Services, a great radio show that was formerly on CKMS but can now be found on CFRU (www.cfru.ca). Corey and I have very similar tastes in music as you can see from the description of his show:

Host Corey W. Schmidt delves into his massive record collection and shares with you some independent pop music delights from around the globe. Side trips are also taken into the worlds of 60s sugar, 70s prog noodling, disco thunder and hot buttered soul, 80s synthesized glam, 90s shoegazing as well as other strangeness that lurks in thrift shop dollar bins. All in all, the best pop music you'll hear all week.

You can download the last few Central Services shows from the CFRU website, I highly recommend them.

Back to this current show which started out with a funky set that followed along from my top song and then an electro pop set because it seemed to fit there, it was only after these that I got back to my bread and butter indie pop sets.

And my big ending that was over 10 years in the making didn't happen. Here is the story, back when I was doing my Masters I remember playing a song with the lyrics "going for my Masters, calling bullshit on my PhD". At the time I thought I would never do a PhD, but then I did do one and I thought that I should really play that song when I was done. Well fast forward to the present and a few weeks ago I had my convocation for my PhD so I thought I should play the song. I had it in my mind that it was by a guy named Wierd Paul (who was popular at CKMS as the time), I went so far as to borrow the album from a friend, but when I listened to the album I couldn't find the song. My search continues for that song I was looking for, but in the meantime I ended with a song by Wierd Paul song anyway.

This show started with two sets dedicated to the record label Cloudberry records ( www.cloudberryrecords.com ). Their website describes themselves as "an indiepop label purveying the sound of jangly guitars based in sunny Miami, Florida", how could I not love them. They look to specialize in shorter products such as 7 inch vinyl, split CD singles, and mini-CDs. The other cool think is that for pretty much all their releases they have at least one song that you can download for free.

I also put in an ectro-pop and funky set, something I haven't done in a while, so that was nice.

This was a 4 song set kind of show, just kind of worked out that way. My top song for the show was a song that I heard a while back at the NYC popfest this spring. But I was reminded of the great performance by Karim and his Brown Coach of Leisure podcast ( http://silenttalkie.com/ ). I just can't get the song out of my head. They are also releasing their first EP soon that I'm very much looking forward to.

I tried not to talk a lot during this show as I felt there was a lot of talking during the Hillside review show. Keeping with the same sentiment I won't write a lot about the show except to say that I was happy with how it came together. Even got a slow set in which is relatively rare for me.

And do listen to the end of the show as the last song by the band Death By Chocolate was fighting to be my top song, but I still can't describe it, you just have to listen.

A lot of this show was dedicated to my review of the Hillside Festival that took place in Guelph in late July. Apart from the artists that I previously knew about, it is always cool to find out about bands that I didn't know existed. My favourite find this year were the Library Voices, as I said in the show, if Los Campesinos! grew up in Regina instead of Wales, they would have been the Library Voices. Another band I quite enjoyed was FRED, apologies to Bernard for not seeing them at the Starlight for St. Patrick's Day.

The first song of the show I first heard on a patio overlooking Niagara Falls, thanks to S for helping to find out the name of the song. The last song was from the movie "500 Days of Summer", a movie I liked on its own but the peppering of indie music throughout made it all the better, thanks to M for getting the song for me. The rest of the show was my usual indie mix.

Uncharacteristically I started this show with a funky set as it went well with my pick for my top song of the week. A few of the songs in that set are a bit long so I hope you can make your way through them. The rest of the show was back to the indie pop sound.

As well as a leftover set from last show's spotlight on the blog Heaven Is Above Your Head, I also played the song "Heaven Is Above My Head" by Louis Philippe that I assume the blog was named after. As coincidence would have it I heard the Philippe song on another podcast last week.

I ended with the song Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants in honour of the Toronto Raptors signing free agent Hedo Turkoglu (I stole this idea from Peter).

Also, a note to anybody looking for something to do on the evening of Saturday, July 18th that I'll be DJing live at the Jane Bond Cafe in Waterloo starting at 10 pm. So if you can make it that would be great and as I wanted to have a more "indie-pop" name I'm calling the DJ nights "The coolest thing about love" after the song by the Smittens.

As often happens, as soon as I find a new source of music I go crazy and get obsessed about getting all the music from that source ignoring my regular go-to sources. For this show it was my discovery of the great MP3 blog/podcast called "Heaven is above your head", the blog is based in New Zealand but it appears that it started out in Sweden. The blog seems to have been going a few years and this past February they started a podcast that unfortunately seems to have ended this past week. Although the blog mostly plays the same sort of indie pop that I love, the podcast also has a heavy focus on 60s and 70s soul songs which is very cool. It just kind of worked out that about half of the songs from this show are from HIAYH as well as a set specifically focused on those cool soul songs.

Even with the focus on HIAYH the show was back to the normal sets divided by different musical types and of course I had to end off with a song by the recently departed Michael Jackson. I know that I haven't really been into anything he has put out in the past 20 years, but when I was growing up Thriller was certainly an album that I (like the rest of world) was in love with. I went with P.Y.T. (Pretty young thing) instead of one of the more famous songs as I remember particularly liking that song back in the day.

This show highlighted my experience at the New York Popfest back in May, in fact the first two sets were from CDs that I bought at the festival. The next set was a combination of other bands that played the festival and songs that were covered during the shows.

Overall, it was a great time and of course being in New York City is always cool, especially walking around Harlem at 2 in the morning. The best conversation I overheard on the subway was one teenage girl telling her friend that she was bummed that she didn't have her iPod, the cops took it when she got busted and she hasn't had the time to get up to the Bronx and get it back, but she only has a month to do it.

This was at the same time the easiest show to do and the hardest. As most of you probably heard my very good friend Derek Weiler passed away in April. I felt that just playing a set or two in a regular show wasn't enough thus this entire show is about Derek.

It contains songs that had special connections between me and Derek from the first day we met to the last time I saw him. His influence on my musical tastes (and those of countless others) will be evident in the music I listen to for the rest of my days.

If Derek thought that you had even a hint of interest in music you were sure to receive a mixed CD or back in the day a mixed tape. And it wasn't just about the music, but it was about the handwritten linear notes, with special notations for the songs he thought you would really like.

Since meeting Derek at a Johnny Cash concert back in the fall of 1991, I can't count the number of bands that I first heard of from him, be it from a mixed tape, mixed CD, in a car, or being dragged to a concert by a band I had never heard of but ended up loving. Apart from going to countless concerts together we also co-hosted a weekly radio show for a little over a year (Jan 1993 to April 1994) called Wackyland, this was the real start of my musical education. This education never stopped as I played a song he recommended on my last podcast and finally got to another recommendation on this show.

Every once in a while in the past month I've heard a tidbit about a band and I think "I should really e-mail that to Derek", but then I realized that I can't do that anymore, and that's something I'm going to miss every single day.

Yes it has been a while since the last show, sorry about that. The good news is that I managed to submit my PhD thesis this week, the downside was that I wasn't able to put out a show for over 2 months. Hopefully I should be able to keep a regular schedule from now on.

The thing is that I never stopped accumulating music over the past 2 months so I really have enough material for about 4 shows, but I didn't think that putting out a 6 hour show was a good idea. So I kept it down to its usual 2 hours and just took a small dent of the backlog.

Apart from playing all the pent up songs from the last 2 months I also did a spotlight on Wee Pop records ( www.weepop.net ). This is a record label out of England that specializes in TWee pop on the format of mini-CDs so each one can only hold about 20 minutes of music. Each release has a very limited edition and the liner notes are all handmade, this combined with the size just makes each release really cute. But they do pose a storage problem as they don't fit well with regular CDs. I got a delivery of 5 releases from Wee Pop just after the last show.

Hopefully it won't be such a long break before the next show.

Between my Best of 2008 and the Christmas show, it has been a while since my last show of new music. And of course you have to remember that most of the music I play is stuff that I've been introduced to in the past month or so as well as some familiar songs sprinkled in.

So it was nice to get back to playing some of my recent finds along with one set of music from CDs that I picked up from other people during the holidays. So thanks to Derek, Sari, and Michelle for their contribution to the show.

In that set I also played a song that I found out from the resurrection of a great show that used to be on CKMS called "The Brown Couch of Liesure". Karim, the host of that show, finally got his act together and is now putting out a weekly podcast from his website ( silenttalkie.com ). He is always listening to great music and I recommend that everybody listen to his podcast and of course I'm sure I'll be stealing lots of stuff from his playlists in the future.

As usual not much to say about this show, simply my best singles and albums from the past year. It shouldn't be much of surprise that my number one album from the past year was Lykke Li's Youth Novels, a great album from top to bottom that I never get sick of listening to. I was also happy to have seen her twice during the year, once in Seattle and then in Toronto for my birthday.

It is also not surprising that just like Lykke Li, Black Kids (my second favourite album from 2008) also had a single on my list from 2007. I had to put Black Kids on as number two as every time I was listening to my MP3 player on shuffle and a song came up that I didn't recognize that I liked when I looked it up it was often by the Black Kids.

This was my annual Christmas show and as usual I didn't play your typical holiday songs. I kept the show short to reflect the amount of really good new Christmas songs I found this year, but still had time to add a few Fireball XL5 Christmas classics.

The best new holiday song I heard this year was by The Wedding Present featuring Simone White with Holly Jolly Hollywood. I've had to listen to it a few times every day because it is that good. The video is also incredibly fun and insanely cute (well at least Simone is insanely cute), do yourself a favour and watch it from the link below.

It was good to finally get back to a regular show that wasn't all about me. As I had not done a show like this
in a while I had a large backlog of new music to play, as evidenced by the fact that this show clocks in at a little over 2 hours and even then I cut out two entire sets that I was originally going to play.

I'll just highlight one of the things I talked about on the show: Every year the BBC asks a list of music
critics and broadcasters to find out which bands will they think will make it big in the next year. They did
pretty good last year as the 2008 list included The Ting Tings, Adele, Vampire Weekend, The Black Kids, and

Theme: Soundtrack of my life, Part 1

As this show coincided with my 40th birthday I thought it was allowable to have a show (or a couple of shows) that are self indulgent. A few years ago I heard about someone doing "the soundtrack of their life" for a school project on the CBC and I thought this sounded like a cool idea and this seemed like a good time to try it.

As I explain in the intro to the show it isn't just a list of my 25 favourite songs of all time, rather they are songs that have for various reasons been significant in my life.

As each song was special there is unfortunately a lot of talking during this show, but I felt each one needed its own introduction.

I decided to split the entire concept into two shows (I figure nobody is actually going to listen to a show about me, but even less than that would listen to a 3 hour show about me). So part one goes from my early years up till my time on my first radio station of CHRW. I will leave my time at university and CKMS for part two.

All the sets had 5 songs this show, don't know just worked out that way. Also interesting is that even without the time restriction of being on the radio, my shows are still about 2 hours long, guess that just the natural way they should be.

I haven't done it in a while but this show I did play a set of people who either just had or were just going to play the area. The highlight was the Awkward Stage whom I saw in Waterloo last week, they put on a great show and they are playing across Canada so look for them in your town. Also in the set were Shout Out Out Out Out coming to the Starlight and The Bicycles coming to Trepid House.

Anybody in the Waterloo area on Saturday, October 18th should check out the annual Zombie Walk starting at Waterloo Park at 2 pm. In honour of the event I played "Walk Like A Zombie" from the classic WhatWave music series (see link below).

I started out with the Stolen Minks from their new album "High Kicks" that I got when I saw them in Guelph. It was a great show, but I have a beef with the venue as although there were 4 bands the first one didn't go on till 11:30 pm. Once again a reminder that The Minks are doing 10 week tour that will probably be coming to a city near you.

I also played the band Holy Fuck (which I'm sure is setting off all kinds of alarms in your e-mail program) who were not only in the news lately for their name ( http://www.hour.ca/news/news.aspx?iIDArticle=15362 ) but are also playing a great festival in London Ontario this weekend ( http://www.lolafest.com/ ).

I got to play the song "The Other Side Of Mr. Sulu" by the Show Business Giants as once again George Takei got in the news: http://www.gaylesbiantimes.com/?id=13075 . The song features great samples from Star Trek including my favourite "It fires lead pellets propelled by expanding gases from a chemical explosion".

I have to thank Mary for my best song of the week, she asked me if I had heard "Sentimental Heart" by She & him, at the time I had not heard of the song but really enjoyed it when I heard it. So much so that I picked up the CD entitled "Volume One" when I saw it in a record store the past weekend. The band consists of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel but you can listen to the show to find out more about She & him.

When playing the "Let's Ride Mega Mix" by Gonzales I started thinking about what is this year's song of the summer. Although I didn't particularly listen to the song this summer it has the elements of a good summer song with the funky beats and summer vibe.

The last set ended with the band the Stolen Minks (friends of the show) who came on my show last year. This year they are doing a mega 10 week tour across Canada and the US and if you are reading this anywhere in North America the chances are they are going to be playing in your town. I was happy with my first non-CKMS podcast, however I am still working out some of the bugs in my system. Thus I apologize for any uneven levels, blowing into the microphone, and songs playing on while I was talking.

As for the show, Derek sent me a song by The baseball project, an album of songs about baseball put together by Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey. The song I played, "The Yankee Flipper", chronicles the time that Jack McDowell gave the finger to the New York fans and the events that lead up to that moment. I also did a set of songs that I found out about through the website blip.fm , where people recommend songs (or "'blip" them) along with short comments on the songs. I played a few songs from two of my favourite DJs on blip, Seeshell and VanillaJ, unfortunately you have to sign up as a DJ in order to see their picks, but it is free and quick.

One of reasons that I have to go on with the show is my reaction when I heard about the passing of Isaac Hayes, the first thing I thought was "I should play an Isaac Hayes song on my next show".

Well my final show went down exactly as I had hoped; lots of people at the station, lots of people playing songs, lots of people sharing stories about CKMS. Thanks to everybody who came the studio that night and everybody who was listening from near and far.

There were sets of music from Dave, Jen, Peter, Sari, Wayne, Karen, Eric, and Derek. I also managed to sneak in a few sets including ones about the Hillside Festival, musicians who had appeared on my show, a set for Charlene, and songs dedicated to friends of the show who were far away.

It was also great to have local artists from Knock, Knock, Ginger and Bocce who talked about their upcoming albums and the great race to see which one will be released first.

And although we bid a fitting farewell to CKMS that night do remember that Fireball XL5 will continue in podcast form for as long as I am able. I picked up some new equipment last week and I think I am ready to go to start recording at home.

OK I shouldn't really do this, but I'm changing the top song from this show after the fact. Although at the time I said it was The Leslies "Take A Look", since that show I have really grown to love the Hello Saferide song "The Quiz". It is so good, it describes the questions that a girl would ask a prospective boyfriend, questions like:

Is your IQ higher than your neighbour’s? And is it very much higher than mine?

Can you sleep when I grind my teeth? Do you look away if I slob when I eat?

Do you talk in the middle of Seinfeld? Do you get racist or sexist when you’ve had a few?

I had just picked up the new album by Mates of State which I am liking very much and that got me thinking about bands where members are romantically involved (no I didn't play Abba). This led to playing I am the World Trade Center, Arcade Fire, and Immaculate Machine, unfortunately after the show I found out that Holiday Flyer are actually a brother/sister duo.

I ended off with the song "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKAs as they had just had the 90th birthday celebration for Nelson Mandela. To show how long I've been on the radio I remember playing that song when Mandela was actually still in prison.

Michelle joined me for this show so the talking bits are lot more interesting then when I do the show solo. After my initial set I managed to squeeze in a set by artists who are going to be playing in the area and a set about honey. I got the idea for the honey set while looking for the song "Shade And Honey" by Sparklehouse and I came upon an MP3 blog entry of songs about honey, so I stole the idea. Of course Michelle rhymed off about 5 more songs about honey during the set but I only had time to play the ones I did.

Here is Michelle's description of her sets:

My first set started off with a song that was played in the final scene of the movie "Young People Fucking", a great little indie Canadian film for which the title does little justice other than publicity as it is quirky, and humorous, with absolutely no, per say, below-the-belt shots (unfortunately -- this comment added by Frank).

The rest of the set included songs I find particularly "summery" including a track from The Cloud Cult who have been releasing their albums on the Earthology Record label, a not-for-profit environmental record label (which includes 100% recycled jewel cases and paper, soy based inks, and the recycling of CD cut scraps into milk cartons). I can't get enough of "I Woke Up Today", I've been listening to it for months and my ears haven't tired in the slightest. Thao Nguyen put on one of the best live shows I've seen yet this year at Sneaky Dee's back in March, a tireless guitar player she whipped her hair about like the wild Vietnamese Virginian she is. At first listen to her cd "We Brave Bee Stings And All" I wasn't sure if it was a girl or a guy singing, at least at times it sounded at lot like The Flaming Lips. The album is certainly one of my favourites so far this year.

I followed my second set up with a number of British bands I've recently discovered (Life Without Buildings, Hefner, Nina Nastasia). Life Without Buildings are from Glasgow, and broke up in 2002, but that girls completely unique vocal style is mind blowing. Also, I had tickets to see Nina at The Drake the night of the radio show but sadly she cancelled. The late John Peel was a huge fan of Nina Nastasia, and he also gave enormous props to Hefner, so I have also recently looked into their back catalogue.

The final song I played was my favourite single from 2007: The Cave Singers - Seeds Of Night. That song is so beautiful it makes me ache.

Sometimes a show just seems to go together well and this was one of those times. A few themed sets along with some random sets and it all comes out well.

The second set focused on the bands that were playing that night in the Trepid House, a private house where small bands play in a great intimate environment. One of them were my current favourite band from Guelph "The Magic" who finally had some recorded material that I was able to buy, Torcus was also really good, but unfortunately although I liked the song by Rockenspiel that I played on the show I wasn't able to stay long enough to see them that night.

I found out about the Swedish band Kuryakin from the great Swedesplease blog and while checking out the band's record label Shelflife I checked out some of their other recent releases. One of the new bands from the label were described as "modern psychedelic pop songs influenced by the heyday of '90s Madchester." So that allowed me to also play bands from those days including The Charlatans who just happened to have a CD in the new release section of the library. Of course I had to play a song to mark the passing of Bo Diddley, I thought the song might be a cover of the Jonathan Richman song, it wasn't, but it was still really good.

On this show I had a set where I highlighted the CDs that I picked up while I was out west in the week before the show. My first musical stop was Seattle where I saw Lykke Li, El Perro Del Mar, and Anna Ternheim, the show was excellent, the venue was excellent, you can hear my review on the podcast (although I did go to Calgary and Banff as well there wasn't much of a musical part to that part of the trip).

Also in Seattle I visited Easy Street Records ( http://www.buymusichere.net/stores/easystreet/ ), a cool fountain( http://nedkahn.com/water.html# and look at the Encircled Stream), and a cool library ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SCL9.JPG ) .

The most amazing thing about Seattle? I walked around for about 4 hours and I only saw 3 Starbucks. The next stop was Vancouver where I didn't see any shows but I picked up some CDs at the great record store Zulu Records and probably could have seen at least 3 Starbucks from almost every street corner.

Before I left for my trip I got a few CDs in the mail from WeePop records ( http://www.weepop.net/ ), the packaging is just so darn cute that it fits perfectly with the music. And there was a Finnish influence to the show as Hannu managed to visit me at the show before he left the country, although he didn't want to speak on air, I noted the Finnish songs that we played.

This was pretty much a random show with a poppy set, rockin' set, laid back set, funky set, and even a failed set.

I'll just talk about the failed set, ahh the magic of live radio. I played the song Twee by Tullycraft and then had the idea to play songs by the bands that are mentioned in the song. Of course I didn't do any pre-show planning so I was hoping to grab the songs while I was there, but nothing worked out, I couldn't find any of the music either at the station or even on the web. So instead of my usually 5 or 6 song set I only managed to find 2 of the artists mentioned in the song and I just decided to quit the set rather than struggle on.

On a side note, one of the bands I did play was the Posies who happened to be playing their 20th anniversary show when I was in Seattle last week, I didn't go, but I saw it listed.

My top song this week was most definitely the oldest top song I have ever had, the reason I heard it was that I watching a documentary on the rise of British music in the 60s and they discussed the Yardbirds who originally featured Eric Clampton on guitar. But this particular song "For Your Love" is the song that drove him out of the band as he considered himself a serious musician and didn't want to do the kind of light fare that the band was doing. Of course the song fits pretty well into the type of pop that I play on my show.

Before this show I went to see a couple of music related documentaries at the HotDocs festival in Toronto, you can hear my reviews on the podcast. There was also a set of music about the CARL! festival that went on the weekend after the show at the fantastic Trepid House, a private house in Waterloo that puts on a lot of great shows.

And on a sad note, I ended the show with the Frank Sinatra song "I'll be seeing you" as a tribute to Mr. Jeffery Millar who unfortunately passed away a few weeks before the show. Jeffery was a friend from Waterloo back in my IMPRINT days, he was a fantastic person who will be missed.

For this show I spent the first set lamenting the loss of a great podcast that after about a year of putting out great indie-twee called it quits. The podcast was called Not Quite Rocket Science and each show had a theme like boy/girl vocals, cover songs, and one titled "Pa pa pa pa ra pa pa pa pas!". This show seemed like it was over before it started, it just went by in flash. Unfortunately for the people who were actually listening (or about to listen on the podcast) I did a lot of talking, mostly about my trip to New York City the weekend before the show. It was only during the show that I was reminded that March 14 is also known as Pi Day (03 14). That person also hooked me up with the song by Kate Bush. By the way, the actual title of the song by Kate Bush is the mathematical symbol for pi, but it is difficult to get that symbol to print in these text files. A quick search of Hype Machine found another "Pie" song by Ben Hibbard and Ted Leo that was not only a Neil Diamond cover but also described here ( http://www.friendsoftom.com/fotpedia/index.php?title=Porcupine_Pie ) as "the worst song in the history of mankind".

I started off with some artists that I hope to be seeing in a few months: all of Lykke Li, El Perro Del Mar, and Anna Ternheim are touring together this spring. And although I am missing the Toronto show, as it happens I will be on the west coast when they are playing Seattle so I'm going to see them there.

There were also a lot of CDs in the CKMS new release section that were interesting, including the entire album from Adele that contains last week's top song. I scanned through the rest of the CD and the rest of it sounds really good as well.

I started a new Leap Day tradition with this show as I had two songs that I couldn't decide between for my top song of the week, so this week there are officially two top songs of the week. Both of the these (along with the third song) all came from the excellent Popcasting podcast ( www.geocities.com/popcastingpop ).

There were also two sets of music from bands that had either just played or were about to play locally. I managed to see most of them, including a short but very fun set by Catriona Sturton, it was only afterward that I found out that she was once a member of the great Halifax indie-pop band from the the 90s called Plumtree. However, as it turns out she hadn't joined the band when the song by Plumtree was recorded.

And can I tell you how much I am lovin' the way that I can now play songs live off the internet using the Wi-Fi capabilities at CKMS. For example on my European Capitals (well almost) set I remembered during the show that I have been meaning to play a song by Jens Lekman that I found on a blog once. I managed to find it again thanks to technorati and play it on the show.

I ended with the only "Leap" song I could think of: a live (and updated) version of his song "Waiting For The Great Leap Forward".

As I never pass up a chance to play bands from the great label Labrador Records, I couldn't resist playing a set of music by bands from the label when I heard the song "I heart Labrador Records" by the band Jam on Toast. All the bands I played in the set are mentioned in the song which contains the great line "All Swedish kids are born with little indie pop hands".

I have to admit that the reason I first listened to the band Parker Lewis (my top song of the show) was because I was a big fan of the TV show Paker Lewis Can't Lose ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker_Lewis ), although looking at some clips on youtube I don't know if the show stands the test of time.

And although the song by Parker Lewis was the top song I had heard in the two before the show, the best new song during the show was by "Foundations" by Kate Nash, do yourself a favour and check it out.

I also want to mention that the band The Summerlad that started out the third set are from Calgary and one of the members is the brother of setlist member Iain G. The song has also been on the CBC Radio 3 Top 30 for the past few weeks.

There was a set of music that was bookended by a couple of bands that were playing The Gig Theatre that night and now that CKMS has wireless internet I was able to play songs directly from the Myspace pages of the local bands, that was pretty cool.

There was a set of music inspired by the band "Au Revoir Simone" whom I saw the week before this show in Toronto (Do you know where that name came from? Answer is after the setlist). I started this set with a cover they did for their encore by David Bowie, with the average age of the audience I'm sure that only about 3 people there recognized the song. Luckily, I was standing beside one of them (Derek). After playing Au Revoir Simone the rest of the set was just kind of low-fi stuff that reminded me of the show.

Theme: Spotlight on HHBTM

I got through a lot of great music this show that I had stored up the weeks and months before. I also did two sets highlighting a great record label with a great name: Happy Happy Birthday to Me. I came upon them reading a blog that described bands as having that "HHBTM" sound, I like the band so I did some research and found out what HHBTM stood for and found the record label's website. Most of the bands have the Indie-Twee sound that I'm into so it was a fortuitous find.

My top song this week was by a band from Florida called the "Black Kids" and their great tune called "I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend To Dance". As opposed to the Shout Out Louds songs (see the August 17 setlist) that sounded like it was a cover of a song by The Cure that I had not heard about before, this song sounds like a song the The Cure might write in the future.

By the way it came from a great podcast that highly recommend, it is the KEXP song of the day ( http://kexp.org/podcasting/podcasting.asp ) every weekday you get a new song, it is hit and miss but when I love a song I really love it like this one.

Yes, I promise this was the last time I will do a direct comparison between Jens Lekman and Jonathan Richman, but if you listen to the two songs the "Bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-ba-bum" part is identical. I'm not alone in thinking this as I managed to find 2 other references to this similarity:

I was lucky enough to have a guest on this week's show in the form of Bruce who came all the way from Saskatoon just to be there (well actually he might have had a meeting in town or something like that as well). As a result of having a guest you might notice from the length of the setlist that we talked a lot and didn't play nearly as many songs as a usual week.

For the first time in a while I played a funky/jazzy/dancy kind of set, I know it has been a while as some of the songs came from the CDs I made a few months ago. The rest of the show was a mish-mash of whatever Bruce and I felt like playing, but overall we mixed up picking out most of the music so I didn't note who picked what on the list.

One thing we didn't really talk much about till nearly the end of my show was recent trip to Chicago, but I did manage to get in my two stories that came from riding on the Chicago subway (you will have to listen to podcast to find out more). But I didn't have the time to properly talk about the main reason that I went to Chicago was to see Jens Lekman, so I'll try and do a better recap on the next show.

Once again I had to make a comparison between Jens Lekman and Jonathan Richman (and I know I promised that this would be the last time during the show but I might have to do it just one more time). In both of these songs they narrate a little story about their past that goes along with the song, they even have some of the same articulation. In the case of Lekman, this version of the song is 7 minutes long from the digital-only EP that was released before the album and it gives a lot more background on the story than the 4 minute version that is on the CD.

I've been listening to the first set of this show over and over again, it was just a really, really good set.
Anchored by the incredible new release by Swedish pop sensation Jens Lekman (he actually did have the number 1 album
in Sweden for a week). The album is called "Night Falls Over Kortedala" and it reminds me a lot of the great songs
that Jonathan Richman was recording in his prime, so of course I had to play Richman in the set. Interestingly,
Lekman's sound is not for everybody and I can see how he might not be eveybody's cup of tea, but for those who are
into him they are usually really into him and so you should give him a shot as he might just become one of your
favourite artists.

The second set ended with Shout Out Out Out Out. Interesting fact I found out about the band while I was listening
to a session they did on CBC radio was that their lead singer is the son of a guy who used to be in band called
Wilfrid N and the Grown Men. I might be wrong on this but I think that I used to listen the them back in the day.
In this case "the day" was back in the late 1980s when I used to listen to a bunch of "garage" bands and I think
they were one of them.

Not only was it kind of cool that he was able to cover a song by his dad it also gave me a great idea for set of
music by garage bands (with the added bonus of making me feel old). Many of the songs I played are available as
free downloads from the London music archive provided by CHRW, the UWO campus radio station where I used to be a DJ.

As a carry over from the last show, there were still lots of new releases at the station that I played for this show. I also got in a set of new CDs that came in the mail from www.poppolar.com , the best place to get Indie pop in Canada. Erico had the new album by Irene on his website a week after it was released in Sweden.

And I had to wait some 30 odd years, but I finally got to play the Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet song "5 American, 6 Canadian" and say "They will have to rename the song 5 American, 5 Canadian". However, it was difficult to plan it out so that my show would come on the first day since 1976 that the Canadian dollar finished the day worth more than the American one, but it was worth it for the joke in the end.

Another week, another guest on the show, this time it was Milosz from the band Knock, Knock, Ginger who came on without his band so we could talk about music. It was also good that Milosz brought his music enabled phone as one of the CD players at the station was broken so it was difficult for me to play consecutive MP3s. His influence can be seen in the second half of the show where we pretty much swapped songs and we also had some good conversations including an interesting one about the importance of editing in music.

Milosz supplied me with my top song of the week, The Ladybug Transistor song "Like A Summer Rain" which to me sounded a lot like the Magnetic Fields so I had to play them right after.

As it happens, in the two weeks before the show I was made aware of a Tullycraft song from two different people, strange as the song is a couple of years old. The name of the song is "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend Is Too Stupid To Know About" and in it he mentions other bands that he likes to listen to, so the rest of the set contains some of those bands.

I ended with a song from the movie "24 Hour Party People" which is a movie about the Manchester music scene and in particular about Tony Wilson the found of Factory Records (Factory Records released such legendary Manchester bands Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays). The reason I played the song was that Tony Wilson passed away a few weeks before the show, and here is an interesting tidbit from his Wikipedia entry (of course this means it might not be true): As with everything else in the Factory empire, Tony Wilson's coffin was also given a Factory catalogue number - FAC 501. This will be the last Factory catalogue number.

Theme: The Stolen Minks Interview

I was very excited before this show as for the first time in a while I was going to have a band come and visit me. I first had the idea when I saw that the Stolen Minks were playing Waterloo the same night as my show, so I e-mailed them and they agreed to come to CKMS before their gig. Unfortunately on the day of the show, they called a little after 6 saying they were just leaving London and didn't know if they would make it to the station time and suggested perhaps making it a phone interview. That's why I might seem a little frazzled in the first half of the show as I was running around looking at the logistics of doing a phone interview.

Luckily, they managed to make it to the station around 7:15 pm and drop of two members of the band, Erica and Tiina (yes that is how she spells it) who came on the show for a couple of great interview segments. They talked about touring across Canada in a van, their albums, day jobs, and there was even a reference to Henry Rollins. It was a lot of fun and they put on a great show that night that I had the pleasure of witnessing.

Before the Ladies came to the show I got in a ska set that stemmed from my top song of the week: a great, great song by Tim Armstrong (former lead singer of Rancid) called "Into Action" that is guaranteed to get you moving. I also played an Elvis set as the show was a day after the 30th anniversary of his death. In looking around the web for songs to play I found the Belle and Sebastian song "Century of Elvis" from an EP back in 1997. As it was back in the days when Stuart David was part of the band he does one of his telling a story over the music type songs, it is funny and definitely worth a listen.

Theme: Hillside Review

This was the first show since the Hillside Festival so I played a couple of the bands that made an impression on me during the festival. My biggest surprise was a band that was probably the youngest band to play the festival as they were the winner of the Guelph high school band contest. They are called "Dance Hall Free For All" (just say that out loud a couple of times, it makes you feel good) and have a great funky sound that really impressed me. Other highlights of the festival were Mother Mother, Immaculate Machine, Two Hours Traffic, and in their first North American show Los Campensions. The rest of the show was a mix between a slow set, a funky set, and a set of a few leftovers from the last couple of shows. The funky set started with a song going out to Mary who likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover the Sly and the Family Stone song "If You Want Me To Stay". If you remember I saw Sly in concert during my recent trip to Italy and he was actually on stage during this song.

I ended with The Zombies "Time of the Season" because The Immaculate Machines covered it as their last song when I went to see them at the Jane Bond the week before the show. Then I was watching a documentary on the 60s a few days later and sure enough I heard the songs once again.

If I sound a bit tired during this show, it is because I woke up that morning in Rome, got on a plane to Toronto, got back to Waterloo, had half an hour at home, and then had to get on my bike for the radio show. So when the show ended it was the equivalent of 2 am for me.

I didn't pick up any CDs during my recent trip to Italy and Poland however I did see a very unique show as the conference I was attending was happening in the same city as Umbria Jazz festival. It turns out this is a pretty major jazz festival in Europe and it made certain aspects of the conference pretty cool in that there was live jazz music on one of the free stages from noon to midnight. On the bad side it made finding a place to stay difficult, I ended up finding a place way out of town that required a bus ride and then calling the B&B owner to pick me up.

The last day I was there, I noticed that both Solomon Burke and Sly and the Family Stone were playing as part of the jazz festival so I had to get a ticket (even though it meant getting back to my B&B at 12:30 am and having to wake up the owner).

Burke is so large that he has a large throne from which he does most of his songs, he was wearing a three piece suit and part way through the concert he took of his jacket to show of his very tight vest and very large man boobs. Unfortunately he stuck with the classics, if he had done "None of us are free" I would have lost it.

Sly was probably on stage for about 15 minutes, his band played for about 25 minutes, then he came out, sang a few songs hunched over the microphone and played a few chords on his keyboards (to be fair to him there were some technical difficulties with his keyboards). Then he stood up, gave the double peace sign and walked off. I don't think he was coming back but I had to leave.

Nothing like a couple of Hillside preview sets to boost up that Canadian Content. For those who don't know, Hillside is an annual festival in Guelph that features great music, great food, and just a great vibe. For this show I previewed some of the bands that were playing Hillside and next week I'll have my Hillside review

Theme: More Calvin Johnson than you can stand

Another week another show. Between the Denver set (where I purchased the latest Calvin Johnson album) and the set of music highlighting his recent shows, there was a definite Calvin Johnson bent to a lot of the show. After seeing him at the Music Gallery last Saturday with Julie Doiron I found out that he was playing a backyard show in Guelph on Wednesday. I liked him so much the first time I had to see him the second time.

It is a good time for the new release section at CKMS with lots of good stuff to play including a couple of surprises such as Code Pie and the Immaculate Machines. There was also a new album by Carolyn Mark, there used to be a time when I would have been very excited by this, but I don't know if I have been all that excited by her recent stuff. However, she and Geoff Berrner are playing the Jane Bond in September and I'll probably go and see them.

The second last set had a mish-mash of ideas:

- the Rubinoos song (thanks Dan) that is the centre of the controversy with Avril Lavigne (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/308830/avril_lavigne_sued_over_girlfriend.html )

- the original of the song that was my top song last week

- and a small feature on a recent great commercial song for Maynard's candy, the one with the girl in the red polka dot dress walking along a street and then splits into different versions of herself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ7pGMfVNVg ) After much research I think I am correct that the band is a Canadian band called Major Maker and the song was written for the commercial and there are no plans to create a full version of the song. However, one of the members of Major Maker is Lindy, so perhaps I will one day be able to ask him as he plays the Jane Bond every once in a while.

This was my first show in over a month so of course I had lots of music to play and not enough time. As such, it wasn't just a top song to start the show but more of a top set as any song in the first set could have been the top song of the week. If you are an Amy Whinehouse fan do yourself and favour and check out the first song, Amy Whinehouse covering the song "Valerie" originally by the Zutons, hear it once and it will be in your head all day.

I was out east at the beginning of June, and as this was the first show since then, I finally got to play all of the music that I collected out there. Only two of the artists were actually from Eastern Canada, the rest I just happened to buy out there. I was very surprised to see the "I'm From Barcelona" CD in a used record store in Halifax (well actually Michelle found it) also surprising is how much I like the songs on the album that I had not already heard. The Smokey Robinson CD was a from a bargin bin in Wolfville just to have something to listen to in the car, and I'm surprised with how many of the songs I recognize and enjoy.

My usual routine is to play 5 songs in each set (maybe something to do with my engineering mind always wanting order in the world) but for this show the sets just worked out better having 6 songs. There was also a weird coincidence in that there was a streak of about 10 songs between Brideshead and The Stolen Minks of songs that featured female lead singers.

I had three songs that were neck and neck for my top song this week, in the end "Summer 2005" by Seymore Saves The World was the one that won by a nose. I first heard it on CHRW, the campus radio station in London, which by the way this was the station that gave me my start in radio during high school so many years ago. The second contender was a song by Pelle Carlberg that has the best (and longest) title of any song I know: Clever Girls Like Cleverer Boys Much More than Clever Boys Like Cleverer Girls. Unfortunately I was away when he played Toronto recently, but I heard it was a great show. The third song was a cover of a Kaiser Chiefs song done by Mark Ronson featuring Lilly Allen, but I'll say more about him on the next show.

During my previous show, I ran out off time before playing another set of "strange" music so I finally got to it this show. The reason for the set was that I found an off-beat song by Robert Forster (formerly of the Go-Betweens) on a children's album and I needed somewhere to play it. The album looks cool, it is called "Songs for the Young at Heart" and also has songs from Bonnie Prince Billy, Jarvis Cocker, and Stuart Murdoch. The set ended with a great cover of "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" by Kids on TV.

A few days before this show, I went to see the Joel Plaskett Emergency and Peter Elkas at the Starlight, it was a great show albeit very uncomfortable with the hot temperature that day and the sold out energetic audience. I followed their songs with a set of music of bands from the Maritimes. This was timely as right after the show I went to both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for a couple of conferences. This was also the reason that I ended the show with Rawlins Cross, the only band from St. John's that I know.

My favourite album for the year so far is one that came as a direct result of the show I did a few weeks back on commercial music, when I got reacquainted with The Icicles and ordered their new album called "Arrivals and Departures". I also went to see them in concert the week before the show and keeping with the title of their album, the women in the band dressed like stewardesses and the male member was a pilot, they also covered the song "Leaving on a Jet Plane". Needless to say I loved it.

Thanks to everybody who sent in suggestions for the "Arrivals and Departures" set, even if for some of them I only sort of got the request correct. Doing research for the set I found out that there are tons of covers of "Getting on Jet Plane", in fact even the most famous version by Peter, Paul, and Mary is a cover of the original by Bob Denver. I ended up playing a version by Lisa Loeb.

There were four songs that could have been by top song for this show, in the end I made it two weeks in a row for a Canadian artist with the band Young Galaxy. Another side project by a member of the Stars, is also makes for a lot of story about the band with headlines that are a variation of "Young Galaxy made of Stars".

And I know I'm late on the bus, but I finally saw the movie "The Forty Year Old Virgin" the week before the show. Apart from being scared of the number of parallels between myself and the Steve Carrel character, the movie also featured some great musical moments. Playing the Asia song "Heat of the Moment" when he was going after the girl at the end of the movie was a brilliant reference to the Asia poster in his apartment. (Of course you had to be of a certain age to recognize the joke) The song "Got Lucky Last Night" that was played over the ending credits is also a great song that I knew I had to play on the show the moment I heard it.

It seemed like I did a lot of talking this show, but I was happy with how it went, as I think I had pretty interesting things to say. Thanks for the suggestions on the commercial music set and as always the site www.adtunes.com was an invaluable resource. I have tried to put in links to web versions of the commercials the best one is for Axe that uses the Israel Kamamawin'ole version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". IZ as he was known, was a very large Hawaiian man who looked very strange playing this tiny ukulele, unfortunately he passed away in 1997 of health related problems.

Another band that I was happy to find out about doing research for the set was the song "Suger Sweet" by the Icicles, not only is it a great song but I also realized that I have played them before doing their song "Snowman". I have now ordered both of their CDs, going to prove that getting a song played on a commercial can pay dividends.

After the show I couldn't get the song "Do the Freddie" out of my head, it was a novelty song back in the 60s by a British band called "Freddie and the Dreamers". It reportedly did start a bit of dance craze, but the Wikipedia description of the dance itself seems pretty boring "stand in place, then in rhythm with the music first extend the left leg and left arm, then the right leg and right arm. Repeat until the song's conclusion". Apparently there was a reference to the dance in the movie "Troop Beverly Hills" that I'm intrigued to see now.

There were two themed sets this show:

The Johnny Marr set - highlighting the various bands that he has played in since his start in the Smiths and ending with his current membership in Modest Mouse

The Equation set - it was hard to even find 4 songs to fill out this set, but I managed to do it with some help from Derek.

As I mention in the setlist below, watch out for the very high cheese factor in the second set.

The opening song was "Runaway Lane" by Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra, I played this because I heard it on the last broadcast of CBC Radio 3 on terrestrial radio (it is now satellite only). I have always loved this song and it was great to hear somebody apart from me playing considering it is now over 20 years old (I have it on cassette).

I ended with the great piece by Bruce McCulloch (formerly of Kids in the Hall) about being a Doors fan, the reason was that I have see advertisements recently about a recent "Very Best of the Doors" compilation and in the McCulloch's song he specifically says that Best of albums are for "housewives and little girls".

Theme: In the Hall of Fame

Thanks for all the suggestions about the Hall of Fame set, as you can see below I tried to stay away from the most popular songs by the artists and used a Van Halen cover instead of the real thing. I got a lot of suggestions for an REM song, but I had to defer to Derek on that one as he is the biggest REM fan I know. I thought that "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was a bit to obvious, so I went with "White Lines". There is also some controversy about the song as to whether or not Grandmaster Flash (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_flash).

I have complained in the past few months about not finding a lot to play from the CKMS new release section, however this has really turned around lately. Combined with the many different websites I have found highlighting the Scandanavian bands playing the recent South by Southwest music festival in Texas it meant that I had lots of songs to play for the show (and lots of songs leftover). Note 3: I loved the title of the album this song is from: "Bring me the head of Steady, Garcia", this reminds me of one of my favourite sketches written by my friend Cat Sullivan called "Bring me the head of Poncho Garcia". This was back in another life when we used to co-host a radio comedy show called The Frank, Frank, and Frank show. Of course they both were taken from the Sam Peckinpah movie "Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia".

Theme: Hard to listen to songs
On Air: Frank

I started out in a funky groove beginning with the top song by Ruth Brown. The set also included a song from the Light in the Attic release "From Jamaica to Toronto", it is a compilation that was released last year featuring acts that came from the West Indies and settled in Toronto. The morning of the show I saw a performance by some of the acts from the CD on Breakfast Television publicising a show that they were doing that night in Toronto, I couldn't make it but that would have been cool to see. Another Light in the Attic release I'm looking forward to is their collection of music from Bollywood movies of the 60s and 70s.

I ended up playing more songs that I had planned in the "hard to listen to" set, see if you are able get through the 7 song endurance test. After that set the rest of show was pretty laid back, I promise more happy, poppy stuff for the next show.

I know it is buried near the end, but the song by Keren Ann "Lay Your Head Down" is a really great song that has really grown on me since the show. It was fighting for the top song spot but didn't quite make it, however do yourself a favour and make sure you give it a listen.

Note 1: I saw the Pipettes at their first ever North American show at the Rivoli in Toronto on March 9. They were totally awesome, they only allowed 100 people into the venue because of a violation the night before. So although the show was "sold-out" the venue was only about half full. Theme: Labrador Records spotlight

I started the show with one of the few vinyl albums I have acquired in the last few years. I got it at a showing of the Canadian movie Monkey Warfare ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0832906/ ) at the Princess Cinema, the director, Reginald Harkema, was at the showing and answered questions after the movie. A few of the questions were about the music in the movie and in particular how much is costs to use a song in a movie (answer: about $500 to the person who performed the song and another $500 for the rights owner of the song). He also mentioned that the bands agreed to have the songs part of a limited edition 1000 vinyl pressing and that he had some copies of it with him. So after the questions were over I was second in line to get a copy. The first two songs were from the soundtrack along with some bonus dialogue from the movie.

Most of show ended up being a spotlight on the Labrador Records label ( http://www.labrador.se/ ). This idea came to me after using a quote from the band Suburban Kids With Biblical Names for my UW weather Station contest ( http://weather.uwaterloo.ca/contest2007/contest2007_entry.htm ). So I thought that I should play at least that song, but when I was looking at the band's record label and saw the rest of the great bands they have put out I started downloading all the songs I could from the record label's website. The label also has just came out with their 100th release, and to celebrate they have released a four CD set featuring a song from each one of their releases, it has the very humble title of "The Complete History of Popular Music".

I ended the show with two songs (a rarity as I usually end with a single song) featuring a couple of people that I saw a few days after the show playing at the Jane Bond. Bob Wiseman did a multimedia show playing various videos from his laptop, playing along with some while others were just funny videos, while Geoff Berner was his usual comical self.

Theme: Not Groundhog Day

I didn't have anything to play for Groundhog Day so I decided not to force the issue as a result there was no set on that theme.

Yet another song from the swedesplease.com website was the top song of the week.

The second set was based on bands that I had either seen just before the show (Camera Obscura and Essex Green) or just after the show (Knock, Knock, Ginger, the Sourkeys, and Bocce):

You can hear my review of the Camera Obscura/Essex Green show on the podcast. And no The Clash didn't somehow reform (and resurrect Joe Stummer), the reason I played the Clash was that it was their "Super Black Market Clash" CD that was played between the bands at the Opera House that night.

The other concert highlighted in that set occurred right after the show at a small art gallery in Kitchener that featured a great bill of local bands, an giant inflatable alien being thrown around the crowd and local band Bocce blurring the line between the band and the audience (see evidence here, only the guy in the red toque is in the band http://www.pbase.com/owencherry/image/73913070 ).

I ended the show with a couple of sets that were a bit more rockin' than most of the music I have played in quite a while (a break from playing all that twee), and I had some initial positive feedback during the show.
