Fireball XL5 is the name of an indie-pop show hosted by Frank Seglenieks that for 18 years was on CKMS 100.3 FM Radio Waterloo. However, as a result of a format change in mid-2008, Fireball XL5 is now heard only as a podcast.

Of course I stole the name of the show from the 60s British Supermarionation program, which featured puppets kind of like the movie Team America.

I play alternative music that usually classified as indie-pop with the occasional feature on a particular artist or theme as well as discussions on pop culture topics of the day. I start off each show with the best song that I have heard since the last
show.

Note that the links to shows older than 6 months might not be working, if you really want those shows please send me an email and I can get them to you.

The biggest set of this week's show was devoted to Stephin Merrit the
man behind such projects as the Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes and
the Sixths, whom Michelle and I went to see in Toronto the Monday before
the show (with Derek and Sari). Even though I only recognized one song
all night it was the best concert I've seen in a while for some of the
following reasons: Lee's Palace is a good venue, they didn't turn the
music up too loud, you could understand everything Merrit said, nobody
in the audience was talking and Merrit just writes really good songs.
I've only really enjoyed two other concerts when I wasn't famillar with
the music: Spirit of the West the first time they played the Bombshelter
and Jerry Jerry when I saw him at the Hoodoo Lounge in Kitchener.

Anybody else have a positive experience with bands they wern't that
familiar with?

Next week I'll be joined by David Kreller for the show.

I was alone this past week as Venus (Michelle) didn't have the energy to
make it to Space City (CKMS). As I was alone I made it random show,
just picking a CD from the top of each pile, mixed in with a set related
to the movie "Something about Mary" and a tribute to the Jane Bond's
"Fag Night" (which Michelle took her mother to by the way), I'll let you
figure out which set it was.

The Monica & Bill thing was a CD with the the presidential seal and
Monica & Bill written on it, the songs just has a man saying "monica"
and a women saying "bill", very strange.

My favourity surprise song was UltraBabyFat's Jonesin, quite good.

Also, does anybody know which city Messenjah is from?
