Fireball XL5 is the name of an indie-pop show hosted by Frank Seglenieks that for 18 years was on CKMS 100.3 FM Radio Waterloo. However, as a result of a format change in mid-2008, Fireball XL5 is now heard only as a podcast.

Of course I stole the name of the show from the 60s British Supermarionation program, which featured puppets kind of like the movie Team America.

I play alternative music that usually classified as indie-pop with the occasional feature on a particular artist or theme as well as discussions on pop culture topics of the day. I start off each show with the best song that I have heard since the last
show.

Theme: Couples and wacky male singers
On Air: Frank

OK I shouldn't really do this, but I'm changing the top song from this show after the fact. Although at the time I said it was The Leslies "Take A Look", since that show I have really grown to love the Hello Saferide song "The Quiz". It is so good, it describes the questions that a girl would ask a prospective boyfriend, questions like:

Is your IQ higher than your neighbour’s? And is it very much higher than mine?

Can you sleep when I grind my teeth? Do you look away if I slob when I eat?

Do you talk in the middle of Seinfeld? Do you get racist or sexist when you’ve had a few?

But if like the songs in the first set you can get your own copy of all of them as they all came from a couple of great and freely available summer samplers that have recently come out: The first one is legitimate as it comes from the great Labrador record label, pick it up here: http://www.labrador.se/news.php3?lab=080702.035034 and the other one is from a blog called eardrum music, a bit less official, but good nonetheless http://eardrumsmusic.com/the-label/summershere_vol1/ .

I had just picked up the new album by Mates of State which I am liking very much and that got me thinking about bands where members are romantically involved (no I didn't play Abba). This led to playing I am the World Trade Center, Arcade Fire, and Immaculate Machine, unfortunately after the show I found out that Holiday Flyer are actually a brother/sister duo.

I ended off with the song "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKAs as they had just had the 90th birthday celebration for Nelson Mandela. To show how long I've been on the radio I remember playing that song when Mandela was actually still in prison.
