Theme: Christmas show 2008 |
| This was my annual Christmas show and as usual I didn't play your typical holiday songs. I kept the show short to reflect the amount of really good new Christmas songs I found this year, but still had time to add a few Fireball XL5 Christmas classics. The best new holiday song I heard this year was by The Wedding Present featuring Simone White with Holly Jolly Hollywood. I've had to listen to it a few times every day because it is that good. The video is also incredibly fun and insanely cute (well at least Simone is insanely cute), do yourself a favour and watch it from the link below. Merry Christmas Everyone! Theme: Back to the indie pop with lots of new stuff |
| It was good to finally get back to a regular show that wasn't all about me. As I had not done a show like this in a while I had a large backlog of new music to play, as evidenced by the fact that this show clocks in at a little over 2 hours and even then I cut out two entire sets that I was originally going to play. I'll just highlight one of the things I talked about on the show: Every year the BBC asks a list of music critics and broadcasters to find out which bands will they think will make it big in the next year. They did pretty good last year as the 2008 list included The Ting Tings, Adele, Vampire Weekend, The Black Kids, and MGMT. You can check out the BBC Sound of 2009 site using the link below. In the third set I played a couple of songs to commemorate those who recently passed away: Odetta and Levi Stubbs (see links below for more information) Links to some of the things I mentioned during the show: Link to BBC Sound of 2009: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7758169.stm Link to Pitchfork review of Black Kids http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/51246-black-kids-partie-traumatic Link to Wee Pop records http://www.weepop.net/releases.php Link to Heaven's Just A Kiss Away http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=235058564 Link to information about Odetta: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odetta Link to information about levi Stubbs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Stubbs Fireball XL5 Setlist - December 5, 2008 TALK (Theme) The Ting Tings - Be The One Masonic - Lifetime of Deception Marching Band - Gorgeous Behaviour Detektifbryån - Neonland TALK (recent CD set) Black Kids - Look at me (When I Rock Wichoo) Vancouger - unmanned (C) Los Campesinos! - Ways To Make It Through The Wall Don Lennon - Really Dave Matthews Herman Dune - On A Saturday TALK (lo-fi) The Endless Bummer - Baseball in China (C) Kevin Ayers - Girl On A Swing Tvärvägen - September Charles Douglas - Where Did I Go The 6ths (with Odetta) - Waltzing Me All The Way Home Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs' Tears TALK (Female voices) Firefox AK - City To City Santa Maria - Lalalalalaaa Point Junction WA - Melon Bird Minisnap - Leave It To You The Passions - I'm In Love With A German Film Star TALK BlueJuice - Vitriol (Pious Edit) **See Note 1 Japanese Motors - Better Trends Salut!machaut - Tom and Joanna The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Everything With You TALK Lizards From Afar - Just A Girl **See Note 1 +/- - Snowblind We and Lisa - Ana The Lovekevins - Private Life Of A Cat TALK Firefly - Love (Is Gonna Be On Your Side) **See Note 2 Note 1: Both of these songs were sent to me. Theme: Soundtrack of my life, Part 2 |
| This was the second part of the soundtrack to my life that I started last time, this show goes from my University days to the present. I won't say much about the show here as I have a pretty long explanation for each song both here and on the actual podcast. Although it might not have been that interesting for most people, I quite enjoyed putting these last two shows together and I would recommend it to everyone. Thanks for putting up with my indulgence and I promise to get back to the indie pop goodness for the next show that will hopefully be out soon. UNIVERSITY Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right (To Party) (Had the album cover in my residence room) Jay McShann - Smooth Sailing (From the first CD purchased) The Clash - Train in Vain (Best of 80s) Sprit of the West - Labour Day (great show at Bombshelter, saw them many times) Stompin Tom - Bud the Spud (show on UNB radio station CHSR) CKMS Dave Claerhout - Wackyland Theme (show on CHRW and CKMS) War Wagon - Dead Soldier (first band than I knew the members of and on album thank yous) Magnetic Fields - 100,000 Fireflies (Derek put this on a mixed tape and I became a big fan of the band) The Cure - Friday I'm in Love (Radio Show in Whitehorse) Barry Gray - Fireball XL5 Theme (do I have to say why?) After CKMS Electronic - One Day (best CD of 90s) Belle and Sebastian - Dirty Dream No. 2 (bad 30th birthday and probably best of 00s) Yo La Tengo - Autumn Sweater (Went to see them the evening after getting married) Acid House Kings - A lover's weekend (first real twee song) Jens Lekman - Sky Phenomenon (best concert ever) Jonathan Richman - Dignified and Old (probably seen more times than anybody else) Armand Mirpour - Curly Boys Law (latest top song, one for the future) (C) Denotes Canadian Content |

Theme: Soundtrack of my life, Part 1 |
| As this show coincided with my 40th birthday I thought it was allowable to have a show (or a couple of shows) that are self indulgent. A few years ago I heard about someone doing "the soundtrack of their life" for a school project on the CBC and I thought this sounded like a cool idea and this seemed like a good time to try it. As I explain in the intro to the show it isn't just a list of my 25 favourite songs of all time, rather they are songs that have for various reasons been significant in my life. As each song was special there is unfortunately a lot of talking during this show, but I felt each one needed its own introduction. I decided to split the entire concept into two shows (I figure nobody is actually going to listen to a show about me, but even less than that would listen to a 3 hour show about me). So part one goes from my early years up till my time on my first radio station of CHRW. I will leave my time at university and CKMS for part two. Here is a link to the video I mentioned during the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJOuTr0BXb4 (as it happens I own the exact same outfit that Bobby Sherman is wearing during this video)

Theme: Cue the Zombies |
| All the sets had 5 songs this show, don't know just worked out that way. Also interesting is that even without the time restriction of being on the radio, my shows are still about 2 hours long, guess that just the natural way they should be. I haven't done it in a while but this show I did play a set of people who either just had or were just going to play the area. The highlight was the Awkward Stage whom I saw in Waterloo last week, they put on a great show and they are playing across Canada so look for them in your town. Also in the set were Shout Out Out Out Out coming to the Starlight and The Bicycles coming to Trepid House. |

Theme: More leftovers |
| Not much to say about this show, still working on lots of leftover song list that just seems to get bigger each week. One of the cool things about CKMS was the new release section, although a lot of time it didn't have much I was interested in, every once in a while it was nice to flip through a CD from somebody I had heard about. One such CD would have been the new release from Montreal's Hexes and Ohs that I happen to know is at CKMS. But I was able to find a place to stream the new album so with a bit of work anything is possible. Here are some of the links I mentioned during the show: Ed Greene Download I said during the show that you could download this song by Ed Greene from his record label, but their website is now under construction. Theme: Holy F*%$ Mr. Sulu |
| I started out with the Stolen Minks from their new album "High Kicks" that I got when I saw them in Guelph. It was a great show, but I have a beef with the venue as although there were 4 bands the first one didn't go on till 11:30 pm. Once again a reminder that The Minks are doing 10 week tour that will probably be coming to a city near you. I also played the band Holy Fuck (which I'm sure is setting off all kinds of alarms in your e-mail program) who were not only in the news lately for their name ( http://www.hour.ca/news/news.aspx?iIDArticle=15362 ) but are also playing a great festival in London Ontario this weekend ( http://www.lolafest.com/ ). I got to play the song "The Other Side Of Mr. Sulu" by the Show Business Giants as once again George Takei got in the news: http://www.gaylesbiantimes.com/?id=13075 . The song features great samples from Star Trek including my favourite "It fires lead pellets propelled by expanding gases from a chemical explosion". During the show I also mentioned that the new Pelle Carlberg album can be heard here: http://www.labrador.se/index_lab115.php3 and the song from Architecture in Helsinki was from the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3ZqjufDWBY . Also note that as I no longer have to worry about CRTC regulations, there are some songs on this particular show that contain some very dirty words, well at least one word that is repeated more than a few times in some of these songs. TALK-Theme The Stolen Minks - Bring It (C) Strip Squad - If You Don't Take Me Right Away You Might As Well Fuck Off Anne Backeley - Underground Summer Love Song California Snow Story - The Only One That Matters TALK Eskobar - Flat Earth Pets - Rollercoaster Heart-sick Groans - The Season For Us Bye Bye Bicycle - Eastside TALK Sea Urchins - Pristine Christine Those Dancing Days - Run Run Architecture in Helsinki - Like It Or Not Sunny Summer Day - So Much Fun TALK The National - Mistaken For Strangers Tindersticks - The Flicker Of A Little Girl Pelle Carlberg - Animal Lovers Parker Lewis - Weird Turns Pro Pale Fountains - Just A Girl TALK (The all connected set) She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?
