Fireball XL5 is the name of an indie-pop show hosted by Frank Seglenieks that for 18 years was on CKMS 100.3 FM Radio Waterloo. However, as a result of a format change in mid-2008, Fireball XL5 is now heard only as a podcast.

Of course I stole the name of the show from the 60s British Supermarionation program, which featured puppets kind of like the movie Team America.

I play alternative music that usually classified as indie-pop with the occasional feature on a particular artist or theme as well as discussions on pop culture topics of the day. I start off each show with the best song that I have heard since the last
show.

Note that the links to shows older than 6 months might not be working, if you really want those shows please send me an email and I can get them to you.

Theme: Christmas show 2008
On Air: Frank

This was my annual Christmas show and as usual I didn't play your typical holiday songs. I kept the show short to reflect the amount of really good new Christmas songs I found this year, but still had time to add a few Fireball XL5 Christmas classics.

The best new holiday song I heard this year was by The Wedding Present featuring Simone White with Holly Jolly Hollywood. I've had to listen to it a few times every day because it is that good. The video is also incredibly fun and insanely cute (well at least Simone is insanely cute), do yourself a favour and watch it from the link below.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Theme: Back to the indie pop with lots of new stuff
On Air: Frank

It was good to finally get back to a regular show that wasn't all about me. As I had not done a show like this
in a while I had a large backlog of new music to play, as evidenced by the fact that this show clocks in at a little over 2 hours and even then I cut out two entire sets that I was originally going to play.

I'll just highlight one of the things I talked about on the show: Every year the BBC asks a list of music
critics and broadcasters to find out which bands will they think will make it big in the next year. They did
pretty good last year as the 2008 list included The Ting Tings, Adele, Vampire Weekend, The Black Kids, and
MGMT. You can check out the BBC Sound of 2009 site using the link below.

In the third set I played a couple of songs to commemorate those who recently passed away: Odetta and
Levi Stubbs (see links below for more information)

Theme: Soundtrack of my life, Part 2
On Air: Frank

This was the second part of the soundtrack to my life that I started last time, this show goes from my University days to the present. I won't say much about the show here as I have a pretty long explanation for each song both here and on the actual podcast.

Although it might not have been that interesting for most people, I quite enjoyed putting these last two shows together and I would recommend it to everyone.

Thanks for putting up with my indulgence and I promise to get back to the indie pop goodness for the next show that will hopefully be out soon.

UNIVERSITY

Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right (To Party) (Had the album cover in my residence room)
Jay McShann - Smooth Sailing (From the first CD purchased)
The Clash - Train in Vain (Best of 80s)
Sprit of the West - Labour Day (great show at Bombshelter, saw them many times)
Stompin Tom - Bud the Spud (show on UNB radio station CHSR)

CKMS

Dave Claerhout - Wackyland Theme (show on CHRW and CKMS)
War Wagon - Dead Soldier (first band than I knew the members of and on album thank yous)
Magnetic Fields - 100,000 Fireflies (Derek put this on a mixed tape and I became a big fan of the band)
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love (Radio Show in Whitehorse)
Barry Gray - Fireball XL5 Theme (do I have to say why?)

After CKMS

Electronic - One Day (best CD of 90s)
Belle and Sebastian - Dirty Dream No. 2 (bad 30th birthday and probably best of 00s)
Yo La Tengo - Autumn Sweater (Went to see them the evening after getting married)
Acid House Kings - A lover's weekend (first real twee song)
Jens Lekman - Sky Phenomenon (best concert ever)
Jonathan Richman - Dignified and Old (probably seen more times than anybody else)
Armand Mirpour - Curly Boys Law (latest top song, one for the future)

Theme: Soundtrack of my life, Part 1
On Air: Frank

As this show coincided with my 40th birthday I thought it was allowable to have a show (or a couple of shows) that are self indulgent. A few years ago I heard about someone doing "the soundtrack of their life" for a school project on the CBC and I thought this sounded like a cool idea and this seemed like a good time to try it.

As I explain in the intro to the show it isn't just a list of my 25 favourite songs of all time, rather they are songs that have for various reasons been significant in my life.

As each song was special there is unfortunately a lot of talking during this show, but I felt each one needed its own introduction.

I decided to split the entire concept into two shows (I figure nobody is actually going to listen to a show about me, but even less than that would listen to a 3 hour show about me). So part one goes from my early years up till my time on my first radio station of CHRW. I will leave my time at university and CKMS for part two.

Here is a link to the video I mentioned during the show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJOuTr0BXb4
(as it happens I own the exact same outfit that Bobby Sherman is wearing during this video)

Fireball XL5 Setlist - October 25, 2008

Bobby Sherman - Easy Come, Early Go (Source of middle name)

GROWING UP

Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman (First single bought with my own money)
Mendelssohn 4th symphony (High school music project)
Not The Nine Oclock News - Confrontation Song (album from London Public Library)
Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio (First alternative song I listen to)
Earth, Wind, and Fire - Let's Groove (best of 70s)

High school/CHRW

Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force- Renegades of Funk (first song played on radio)
Helen Reddy - I am Woman (Theme to Frank, Frank, and Frank show)
Lloyd Cole - Lost Weekend (Song played often on CHRW simply because it was short)
Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (First Concert)
Run DMC - Rock Box (first Toronto concert, first mixed tape given by someone else)
The Pogues - Dirty Old Town (Memories of Pat and Dave)
Altogether Morris - Eaten Alive (Dave and I played this song a lot) (C)
Butthole Surfers - Sweat Loaf (More fun from CHRW)

Theme: Cue the Zombies
On Air: Frank

All the sets had 5 songs this show, don't know just worked out that way. Also interesting is that even without the time restriction of being on the radio, my shows are still about 2 hours long, guess that just the natural way they should be.

I haven't done it in a while but this show I did play a set of people who either just had or were just going to play the area. The highlight was the Awkward Stage whom I saw in Waterloo last week, they put on a great show and they are playing across Canada so look for them in your town. Also in the set were Shout Out Out Out Out coming to the Starlight and The Bicycles coming to Trepid House.

Anybody in the Waterloo area on Saturday, October 18th should check out the annual Zombie Walk starting at Waterloo Park at 2 pm. In honour of the event I played "Walk Like A Zombie" from the classic WhatWave music series (see link below).

Theme: More leftovers
On Air: Frank

Not much to say about this show, still working on lots of leftover song list that just seems to get bigger each week.

One of the cool things about CKMS was the new release section, although a lot of time it didn't have much I was interested in, every once in a while it was nice to flip through a CD from somebody I had heard about. One such CD would have been the new release from Montreal's Hexes and Ohs that I happen to know is at CKMS. But I was able to find a place to stream the new album so with a bit of work anything is possible.

Here are some of the links I mentioned during the show:

Ed Greene Download
I said during the show that you could download this song by Ed Greene
from his record label, but their website is now under construction.

Theme: Holy F*%$ Mr. Sulu
On Air: Frank

I started out with the Stolen Minks from their new album "High Kicks" that I got when I saw them in Guelph. It was a great show, but I have a beef with the venue as although there were 4 bands the first one didn't go on till 11:30 pm. Once again a reminder that The Minks are doing 10 week tour that will probably be coming to a city near you.

I also played the band Holy Fuck (which I'm sure is setting off all kinds of alarms in your e-mail program) who were not only in the news lately for their name ( http://www.hour.ca/news/news.aspx?iIDArticle=15362 ) but are also playing a great festival in London Ontario this weekend ( http://www.lolafest.com/ ).

I got to play the song "The Other Side Of Mr. Sulu" by the Show Business Giants as once again George Takei got in the news: http://www.gaylesbiantimes.com/?id=13075 . The song features great samples from Star Trek including my favourite "It fires lead pellets propelled by expanding gases from a chemical explosion".

During the show I also mentioned that the new Pelle Carlberg album can be heard here: http://www.labrador.se/index_lab115.php3 and the song from Architecture in Helsinki was from the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3ZqjufDWBY .

Also note that as I no longer have to worry about CRTC regulations, there are some songs on this particular show that contain some very dirty words, well at least one word that is repeated more than a few times in some of these songs.

TALK-Theme
The Stolen Minks - Bring It (C)
Strip Squad - If You Don't Take Me Right Away You Might As Well Fuck Off
Anne Backeley - Underground Summer Love Song
