Fireball XL5 is the name of an indie-pop show hosted by Frank Seglenieks that for 18 years was on CKMS 100.3 FM Radio Waterloo. However, as a result of a format change in mid-2008, Fireball XL5 is now heard only as a podcast.

Of course I stole the name of the show from the 60s British Supermarionation program, which featured puppets kind of like the movie Team America.

I play alternative music that usually classified as indie-pop with the occasional feature on a particular artist or theme as well as discussions on pop culture topics of the day. I start off each show with the best song that I have heard since the last
show.

Note that the links to shows older than 6 months might not be working, if you really want those shows please send me an email and I can get them to you.

October 12, 2001

Date: October 12/2001
Theme: Polka, Polka, Polka
On Air: Frank and Michelle

I actually started off with almost a half hour of polka (or polka type) music for the Oktoberfest show, longer than usual, I've marked the songs from that set that I have never played before. After that it was sampling the new relases until we ended off with the Jonathan Richman spotlight to highlight the fact that me, Michelle and the Ambassador saw him play at Lee's Palace the week before.

The theme to the next show is being determined by outside forces, first off, although it will be almost a week before Halloween I think I'll have to play a few ghouly selections. But most of the show will feature Canadian artists as it SOCAN time at CKMS. To explain, SOCAN is the agency that distributes royalty money to artists, to judge how much each artist should get they survey stations at different times during the year to see what they are playing. In the case of a campus station like CKMS we get surveyed for 4 consecutive days every 3 months. I don't know exactly how much an artist gets each time I play them during a SOCAN period but I think (and hope) that it is betwen $0.50 and $1.00, although it also depends on the length of the song so it's not easy to say. I know a few people on the list have songs registered with SOCAN so they might be able to give me more details. The long and the short of it is... request a local artist who is registered with SOCAN then the next time you see them you can say "Hey I requested you during SOCAN week - you owe me a beer!".

We also might have a guest on the show, but I don't want to jinx it.

And I know that New Order released an album since the last show, but I didn't think a spotlight on them would fit in this upcoming show so I'll leave it until the first show of November.

I have also attached a list of the upcoming shows at the Jane Bond for the next while. I'm looking forward to both the Spookey Ruben and Joel Plaskett shows especially.

March 30, 2001

I was joined this show by Trevor and Heather who share my love of baseball and in particular the Toronto Blue Jays, we had a few talking bits about the Jays and baseball. Of course we had to get all of the baseball take out of the way before Michelle came and banned any more of it.

Yes, yes I know I promised the year end CD last week, well a certain colour laser printer went down last week and has been very slow in returning from the shop, all I know is that they'll get out eventually.

The next show is Good Friday April 13th (yes I know it's also Friday the 13th but it seems like a did a show with that theme just a little while ago), don't really have an idea of what to play, but as it is the easter season and some of us might be decorating eggs before the show are there any songs about EGGS?

I'm also interviewing Andras Jones (who is playing the Jane Bond on April 21) before the show, so depending on how it goes I might play some of it during the show.

Happy Easter Everybody!

March 16, 2001

I had more fun than I was expecting during the St. Patrick's Day show, we split the music into a set of celtic sounding music and then bands that have some Irish connection even if they don't sound celtic, ie. I don't think My Bloody Valentine was played as too many Irish Pubs on St. Patrick's Day. But looking over the setlist now I realize that all of the celtic music I have listened to is 5 - 10 years old, I just haven't been into that kind of music in many years, I don't know why.

The next show (Friday March 30) will be just a couple of days before one of the most important dates on my calendar - Opening Day of the Baseball Season. Any baseball themed requests would be appreciated.

I know I've been saying it for the last 4 weeks, but this time the Official Fireball XL5 CD is really almost ready to be shipped, they will start going out this weekend.

One last thing, once again Team CKMS is climbing the CN tower to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund (www.wwf.ca) on April 21, if you feel like sponsoring me please contact me.

I know I was a little nervous about the Inner city Surfers coming on the show last week, I downloaded a few of their songs and they were a bit heavier than I was expecting. For some reason I had visions in my head of Hell Angel's pulling up to the station, but it turns out they were just a couple of white suburban kids being punk rockers. They were articulate and friendly and left after half and hour, overall it went as well as could be expected. They were playing that night at the Bombshelter opening for former local band Paintbox (featuring Greg Hood-Morris for you Imprint alums).

I also finally got to play a few leftovers from the kiss set, including some of Kenton's suggestions. I also had a set of CDs that I was listening to in my office, Michelle doesn't get to listen to CDs in her office. Here's a good setlist question:

1) Are you allowed to listen to music during work
2) Do you?

I was also hoping to have started distributing the official "Fireball XL5 Best of 2000" CD by the time I wrote this. Although I'm close the first CD is still a few days off. But I WILL be distributing them before the next setlist so if you don't think I have your mailing address please e-mail it to me (not for KW people of course).

The next show (March 16) is of course the day before St. Patrick's Day, not really my favourite celebration, lining up all day, people drinking green beer, not really my scene (Of course I'll probably find myself at the Jane Bond on Saturday night watching Bernard in his band the Wagon Wheels anyway). So if you want to send along your favourite Irish themed selections it would be appreciated.

See the current Survivor Contest standing, right now Michelle is looking hard to beat:

The kiss set went well, in fact if I could have found all the songs I was looking for I probably could have done the whole show on that theme. Especially with all the suggestions I got from different people with quite a few from Kenton, unfortunately me being a big doufus forgot to print out Kenton's e-mail and I couldn't play any of his songs, for this I apologize. I'll try to play a couple of them this show.

For this week's show (March 2) a band that is playing the Bombshelter on Friday, the Inner City Surfers has asked to come on the show. I haven't had a band on the show since my days of doing the Friday afternoon show with Kenton and Derek, but I remember it was always fun to have people on the show. I have no idea what they sound like but I have decided to go for it, I hope that wasn't a mistake.

New music abounded during this show, this meant I liked some of the music and hated some of it, but if you don't take chances how are you going to find new music you like? The show then ended with my tribute to the departed Al Waxman and songs that Michelle thinks are similar so we played them together.

After the setlist are your best of 2000 lists, thanks for all who submitted them and bad on you that didn't (maybe I should make submitting a top 3 list a requirement for getting the Best of 2000 CD, which I've been asked about and yes we are in the early planning stages for it). In the meantime here the official Fireball XL5 Best of 2000 webpage is now ready for viewing:
www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/frseglen/archive/best_of_2000.htm

This week's show (February 2) is of course Groundhog Day, I have no idea what to play to honour this day of international celebration (and incidently the birthday of list member John Shimeld) so if you have any ideas send them along.

And one more thing:

Can you believe they voted Kel off!

Jonathan Richman - I must be King He was the King
Lowest of the Low - Salesmen Cheats and Liars (C) Michelle and I saw him in Death of a Salesman
The Look People - Trucker Butt (C) **See Note 1
TALK
Crash Vegas - Red Earth (C) **See Note 2
The Lemonheads - Outdoor Type
Billy Bragg - Great Leap Forward
The Caribean - Verse by Verse
TALK
The Soggy Bottom Boys - I am a man of Constant Sorrow

Note 1: I played the Look People because the lead singer Jaymz Bee always said he
was the president of the Al Waxman fan club and that he had a tatoo of Waxman on
his arm. I looked for him on the TV coverage of the funeral but I didn't see him.

Note 2: Ever since I have played the Lemonheads' song Outdoor Type from the Tao
of Steve soundtrack Michelle said that it reminded her of both the Crash Vegas
song and the Billy Bragg song, after hearing them played together I agree that the
beginning of all three songs are almost identical. Who is stealing from whom?

the individual artist.

January 5, 2001

Another easy show as we own almost all the music played on the show, with
the exception of the first set which came other people's top 10 lists. This
year I actually had 10 albums of the year (last year I only had 7), but there
wasn't one album that really stood out above the rest, just a lot of good
albums that made choosing the top 4 difficult. In fact I didn't make my
final decision until the end of the show.

Here are my top 5:

1. The Gruesomes - Cave-In
A Canadian garage band from the early 90s, so maybe it's just me re-living
my younger days and sure all their songs sound the same, but they are
goofy and fun and everybody should have at least on Gruesomes album (this is
my second).

2. Looper - The Geometroid
Stuart David left Belle and Sebastian and formed Looper after the lastest
(disappointing) album by Belle and Sebastian, I think he left just in time. This
album by Looper just has a certain energy that makes me keep listening to it.

3. Various Artists - Tao of Steve Soundtrack
Normally I don't like putting soundtracks on best of lists, but this one is
different as a few of the songs were written specifically for the movie and
the rest are intimately associated with it.

4. King Cobb Steelie - Mayday
The boys from Guelph really put it together for this one, radio friendly and
catchy, some say sell-out I say all the power to them.

5. Paul MacLoed - Close & Play
Paul finally comes out with the album he was capable of, his association with
Hawksley Workman has greatly improved the energy in his songs.

And Michelle's:

1. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
The Hoboken Trio produced an album just for me (i.e. no marathon electric guitar feed-back sessions). The more I listen, the more the songs repeat through my head all day long, and I'm just not getting sick of them.

2. Sarah Harmer - You Were Here
I really liked Weeping Tile but passed over Sarah Harmer last summer at Hillside. That was a mistake - I can't stop listenting to her dreamy voice. Listening to Loadstar alone in a quiet room is simply amazing.

3. Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast
After recent rave reviews I had to hear this album - no disapointments here.

4. Twilight Singers - Twilight
Greg Duli from the Afghan wigs delivers a melodic masterpiece. No real singles on this album, it just works as a whole experience.

5. King Cobb Steelie - Mayday
More reminiscent of "Rational" - so I love it.

Here are some other sources of top 10 lists:
http://www.radiosonic.com/content/week/top10s2000.htm
http://www.exclaim.ca/common/display.php3?articleid=411
http://www.ckmsfm.uwaterloo.ca/top10folder/index.html
http://www.mrg2000.com/merge/news.html

And once Michelle tells me her whole list I'll update the Fireball XL5 Best of 2000 webpage.

Next week I'll send out the top 3 of the people who get this mailing, so there is
still time to send my your top 3 of 2000 if you haven't already done so.

For this week show (January 19) I want to concentrate on new material as we
have been neglecting it during the Christmas show and the Best of show.
However with the unfortunate passing of Canadian Legend Al Waxman I want
to have a set devoted to him, pass along any suggestion you have.
